The Menger Hotel, San Antonio, Texas

Famous for being where Theodore Roosevelt gathered his Rough Riders, The Menger Hotel is another bit of San Antonio history to behold.  It’s right next door to the Alamo, and it’s been on my list for some time to stop in for one drink at the fabled Menger Bar.  I told Steve if we made it there on this trip, I may just splurge and have a martini (instead of my predictable glass of red).  Well, folks, I had the best martini I have ever tasted, prepared and served by a Menger Hotel history buff.  While she expertly prepared my libation, she shared Menger fact and lore that kept us on the edge of our seats.  By the way, her secret to the perfect martini is to chill the vermouth with the ice that’s used to chill the glass, then dump it all out when ready to pour the cocktail into the chilled glass.  Just “the legs of the vermouth” (her words, not mine) remain in the glass, creating just the right balance.  I think she had some other kind of magic going on, but I’ll take her word for it.

I took a quick stroll through the hotel to take in the antiques and architecture, then with the liquid courage we just consumed, we were off to the last stop of our day.

Keep looking up ☺️
