Local Flavor, Bay City, Texas

Off the ferry and back on semi-dry land, we stopped for lunch.  Staying true to our style, I found a local eatery off the beaten path.  Well, not on the tourists’ radar, but our next stop was DEFINITELY on the local’s radar.  Reviews of Davis BBQ and Cafe spoke of getting there early before the line is out the door, and you know it’s good when all the police, construction workers, and old guys eat there regularly.  Their barbecue is supposedly some of the best ever, but we couldn’t tell you about that.  Since it was lent, the BBQ buffet was filled with fried catfish and all the fixings.  The front of the cafe looked restaurant-y, but the dining area looked like a local meeting hall, not that there was anything wrong with that.  One could order off a menu posted behind the register, or go for the buffet.  I happen to love southern cornmeal-crusted fried catfish and shrimp étouffée, so I went for the buffet.  I also couldn’t resist helping myself to old-fashioned side dishes, and, let’s face it, a good helping of people watching.  Steve ordered from the menu, and my choice was far better than his, considering how much catfish he ate off my plate.

Just as I thought, there were plenty of “hey’s”, and “how ya doin’s”, and a few out-of-towners like us.  Filled up on local flavor, both literally and figuratively, we hit the road bound for Galveston.

Home style cooking, nothing fancy here. Just darn good southern food, and chatting with the locals.
