For Old Time’s Sake, Sonora, TX

We stopped for lunch at a place that holds fond memories for us.  The last time we ate at this little Mexican restaurant we were traveling with Steve’s dad and mom, Dick and Marlene, and Auntie Glenda and Uncle Barry (Dick’s brother and his wife). La Mexicana Restaurant is in Sonora, Texas, another small town with good folks. and the timing is right to stop and stretch your legs and get a bite to eat.

La Mexicana has been around for 30 years. We met the owner this time, what a doll!

As most of you know, Steve’s first impression of any Mexican restaurant worth it’s salt has to be great salsa.

A cheat-on-the-healthier-eating chicken chimichanga con queso for Steve. And, of course, no beans in sight.

Crispy taco and cheese enchilada for me. See those thin, crispy corn tortillas? ALL HAND MADE!

The place plays the silliest Mexican music I’ve ever heard.  It’s not Mariachi, and it’s not the typical Mexican radio station music, either.  I don’t really know how to describe it other than Tejano musicians run amok with synthesizers and tequila.  Cracked me up.

My ridiculous jalapeño allergy makes eating at Mexican restaurants somewhat of a challenge, and La Mexicana took great care of me.  The queso was on the side on my plate, since they thought Steve might want a little extra (he didn’t, his plate has more than enough).

We raised our iced tea and soda to salute the four that weren’t there with us this time, happy to have the memories.
